Ronit Krushka (Weisz), a cigarette-smoking, wise-cracking, career woman living in Manhattan, reluctantly returns to London after the death of her estranged father, a famous rabbi with whom she never got along. She faces the often too judgmental and unforgiving Orthodox Jewish community she fled years ago. In the lonely aftermath of her father’s memorial and the community’s rejection of her, Ronit confronts the tangle of connections she left behind. Her old friend Dovid, her father’s protégé, is now heir to the prestigious leadership position and has married another childhood friend, Esti (McAdams), with whom she shared a forbidden relationship long ago. Ronit and Esti re-ignite their affair, and Ronit is again viewed as a scandalous threat to the conservative community. However, the disruption her presence creates allows for Ronit, Esti and Dovid to find a way to reconcile their love and faith on their own terms.
